In On The Top, Marcin Glod reinterprets the traditional Alpine landscape through the visual language of Pop Art and contemporary appropriation. At the centre of the composition stands Scrooge McDuck, dressed in an elegant red coat and top hat, confidently holding a walking stick while standing on a money bag. The iconic character becomes a symbol of wealth, ambition and achievement, connecting the idea of financial success with the metaphorical ascent towards the summit.
The dramatic mountain scenery and winding path evoke the challenges, persistence and determination required to reach the top. The signpost marked “Austria” anchors the work in a specifically Austrian context, referencing the country’s Alpine identity and association with prosperity and a high standard of living. The contrast between the classical, almost romantic landscape painting and the instantly recognisable cartoon character creates a playful tension between traditional ideals of success and contemporary consumer culture.
By combining an inherited landscape aesthetic with popular imagery, Glod challenges the boundaries between high art and mass culture. On The Top becomes an ironic yet celebratory reflection on ambition, wealth and the pursuit of success - asking whether reaching the summit is about the journey itself, the status achieved along the way, or the fortune waiting at the top.
